About

Elias Alfau is a New York based dancer/choreographer. Originally from Long Island, New York, Elias received his training from the Long Island High School for the Arts & the Eglevsky Ballet. Elias was also involved in the dance convention/competition circuit dancing under the studio MB Dancers. Currently, Elias recently graduated Cum Laude, getting his BFA in Dance at the University of the Arts under the direction of Donna Faye-Burchfield. During his time at UArts, he trained with Kim Bears-Bailey, Tommie Waheed-Evans, Mark Caserta, Jesse Zaritt, Michael Sheridan, and Elisa Clark. Elias had the opportunity to perform in works by Sidra Bell, Doug Varone, Symone Holliday, Juel D. Lane, and Thom Kitt. Elias presented his senior thesis, “Fusible Future(s)” in November 2021 at the University of the Arts, which was then invited to perform in Koresh Dance Company’s artist showcase. Fresh out of college, Eli was asked to join the company “JUNK” directed by Brian Sanders to be part of their Fringe Festival Series of their new show “Luster”. Most Recently, Elias performed in the “Flesh & Steel” Festival with choreography by Neil Schwartz. Currently, Elias is an assistant to Theresa Stone, and Neil Schwartz. Elias is very interested in visualizing his own personal aesthetic through movement research, relation to life experiences, manipulation of phrase material, and trust in intuition. He likes to honor both commercial and concert dance influences in his personal movement quality.

Artist Statement

I get lost in sensation through music; The beats embellish my skin as the vibrations travel through my body. I close my eyes and transcend through a portal. Through the lens of eroticism and queerness, my work has an emphasis on futurism. My practice involves queering the body away from normalcy to question the past and act as a proposal for possible “queer futures”. Through indulging in sensation, I want to experience sensuality and pleasure in a non-sexualizing way. I want to take the power from the audience's gaze back to the performer. Within a world of binaries, I'm trying to create a space that recognizes duality and fuses those oppositions. What do we consider feminine and masculine? Shifting and pulling from technique, codified forms, and street styles I'm interested in the ways we can consider movement and the ways we can fuse commercial and concert dance.
